Questions & Answers
Q What will my home movies look like after they have been transferred?
A There are a few factors that determine what your home movies will look like after they have been
transferred. These factors include: the era the film was shot in, the quality of the movie camera
that was used, the photographic ability of the person using the movie camera, the quality of the
film stock that was used and what kind of environment the movie film was stored in over the years.
My dad would forget to change the F stop on his camera and every once in a while the film
footage would be dramatically overexposed. In cases like this, we can make the footage look
better, but it will never look as good as properly exposed film.
In general, most home movies will look very good after we have transferred them. We use
professional transfer equipment and with our modern cleaning and restoration methods, your
home movies will look as good as they can.
Q How is my film handled at The Film Whisperer?
A Before we handle any film, we put on special Kinetronics anti-static professional film handling
gloves (or rubber gloves during cleaning). Before, during and after the transfer, your
home movies are always kept in a safe, secure, temperature controlled environment and treated
like the historical documents that they are.
Q Do you clean and repair my movie film?
A Yes. All movie film is inspected, cleaned and all defective splices are replaced with proper film
cement welds (using Bolex editing equipment). This service is included in the transfer price.
Q How long does it take to transfer my home movies?
A It depends on our volume at the time of transfer. However, as a general rule, it takes three weeks
or less. September through December are high volume months, so if you have a job that needs a
fast turn around time, please contact us at contactus@thefilmwhisperer.com for transfer times.
Q Can I see an example of film that you have transferred?
A Yes. You can send in a short roll of your film and we will transfer a small portion (60 seconds or
less) of the film for you to see at no charge. We can send you the example on DVD or you can
view the footage on the internet (your home movie example will be password protected so that
only you will be able to view the footage online).
Q What types of movie film can you transfer?
A Currently we can transfer reversal Regular 8mm and Super 8 movie film.
Q How do I know if I have Regular 8 or Super 8 movie film?
A Because our prices are the same for Regular 8 or Super 8, you don’t have to know the difference
between the two. However, you will have to know the difference between 8mm film and some of
the other formats that were used for home movies. You will need to get a ruler and measure the
width of the film. 8mm film is 8mm wide. The other popular home movie format was 16mm film
and this was 16mm wide. Currently, we do not transfer 16mm film.
Q Do you transfer black and white home movie film?
A Yes. We transfer color and black and white reversal Regular 8 and Super 8 film.
Q Do you transfer home movies that have sound?
A Not at this time. This may change in the future if there is increased demand.
Q Do you transfer 16mm movie film?
A Not at this time. However, based on demand, we may transfer 16mm in the future.
Q Can you color correct my home movies?
A Yes. While there is no substitute for a properly exposed film, we can color correct scenes that
are too blue or too red. We can also correct the contrast, tint and overall brightness of a scene.
We can also perform minor film restoration by taking out scratches and some defects in your film.
Q How many DVDs do I get with my order?
A On orders that are less than 400 feet you will receive one DVD. On all orders of 400 feet or more,
you will receive (on request) two DVDs included in the transfer price. If you would like more than
two, there is an $5.00 charge per DVD.
Q Will the DVD you send me work on my DVD player?
A The Film Whisperer records to universally accepted formats. If you would
like to be 100% sure, we can send you a demo DVD in advance of your order to check for
compatibility.
Q What packaging will my DVD come in?
A Your DVD will come in a standard DVD jewell box.
Q What kind of extras can I get on my DVD?
A. There are several extras that you can add to your home movie DVD. We can add customized titles, backgrounds, chapter stops, still photos, your audio commentary (just like the Hollywood movies have) and music. Because the extras can be so customized for each family, it is almost impossible to give a standard price. Generally, extras amount to about 20% of your total transfer order.
